Galleria Luna Fine Art is proud to present to its collectors the beautiful aquatint-etchings, otherwise referred to as intaglio work by artist Gail Packer. Ms. Packer has earned many awards for her unique style and has mastered her skills over the past 38 years since the completion of her fine arts degree in printmaking and painting in 1967 at Wayne University, Michigan.
The artist is mostly influenced by Medieval Art and Decorative Art Movements, ancient civilizations and the surrounding Northern California countryside and nature where she resides. Gail also travels abroad with camera in hand only to return to her studio to revisit impressions, scenes, and experiences with new work. Her signature technique involves taking a simple scene and expand on it with the use of symbols, plant life, animals, and elements of nature that reflect upon the central image onto a border surrounding the image and into the framework, which is custom painted by a colleague. Packer’s work is representational, even though there is great care and detail in her style. One can gaze at her pieces and be led through a journey of discovery and delight. For example a coastal scene may be enhanced by a border with detailed etchings of seashells, seaweed, seagulls, or trees that are representational of the area she is portraying. The custom painted frame then expands the theme further.
The subject matter of Packer’s work currently available includes California coastal and mountain scenes; vineyards in the all seasons; blooming lavender from the fields Provance, France; and the canals and architecture of Venice, Italy; as well as a themed piece for each month of the year. Her newest release is called “Bixby Bridge, Big Sur, California” and is an edition of 200.
Packer comments: "In my prints I am looking for a vision of the world not limited to a particular time or place. I work with material that I have gathered through Photography for a point of reference, however, my work is not intended to be a literal interpretation. It is a translation of what is seen through the mind and eyes of an artist. My work is a result of the many things that interest me and it changes as I discover new visual interests. It is a result of a combination of things from Medieval Art (Books of Hours), the Decorative Arts Movement, ancient civilizations and the country environment in which I live.
I like the concept of taking simple scenes that might be observed every day and moving them to a more exalted place through the use of borders and framework. The framework has changed over the years into a use of naturalistic forms in a decorative way involving plant life and animals that reflect upon the central image.
I have chosen the medium of Printmaking because I like the concept of multiples as well as the effect that one can achieve only through intaglio work. I am especially fond of the textures and effects of the aquatinted areas. The fusion of painting concepts with the Printmaking process is very stimulating to me.”
Gail Packer is a nationally recognized artist and her etchings are a part of many private and corporate collections. All of Gail's etchings are framed in hand painted folk art frames done by artist Hildy Henry.
