Bryan Mark Taylor is a young artist who has already developed a large following and acclaim as a plein air landscape and cityscape painter. Whether painting the rugged coastside of Half Moon Bay, a sunset at Assi, or the streets of San Francisco or Paris at night, his work is infused with originality. “I spent most of my life in the suburbs. When I came to San Francisco and saw the city at night I was amazed at the beauty and everything moving so fast. It had a big impact on me” says the artist.
Bryan Mark Taylor brings a splash of unforgettable brilliance and a burst of expression into his San Francisco and Parisian “Nightscapes.” The viewer is captivated while gazing into the nocturnal skies of deep earthy red tones, midnight blue and celadon that differentiate the hours of night. Bold strikes of light in thick impasto are then applied creating a radiant glow from street lamps, head and tail lights of passing vehicles and storefront windows. Taylor’s distinctive brush strokes and sophisticated layering of wet on wet oils provide a complexity of color, depth and perspective that invite you to travel into the night scenes with him. He creates a new world as he paints the buildings, cars, trolleys, bicycles, signs, windows, doors, lights and people. These details fuse together to become a unique city – and yet retain the embodiment of the original city that started the process. His imagination is able to take him to a magical place that we usually only see in our dreams and memories. Taylor communicates not only with color and shape but also with emotion. One collector described this effect by saying, “I can hear the sounds of the city as I view his work.”
Born in Oregon and raised in Utah, Taylor recently received his Masters of Fine Art at the Academy of Art in San Francisco.
